Procedure: Dental Fillings Versus Dental Inlays & Onlays
Fillings and inlays and onlays are both simple procedures and can be completed in a single appointment. A filling is used to repair tooth decay or may be used to address a chip or crack in your tooth. Our dentist will use a composite resin shaded to match your tooth to address the damage after removing the tooth decay or shaping your tooth to fit the filling.
But in some instances, the damage may be too severe to be solved with a filling, but not quite bad enough to require a crown. In those cases, a dental inlay or onlay may serve your smile well. An inlay is placed directly in the tooth and used to repair damage that has not reached the edge or cusp. If the damage does reach the cusp, our dentist will place an onlay over it to protect it from further problems and restore its structure and appearance. We will design and create your inlay or onlay right in our office, using CAM/CAD technology to help ensure a proper fit.
