Procedure: Prophylaxis Versus Scaling and Root Planing
It is worth noting that plaque can accumulate below the gumline and on the roots of your teeth. This can cause your gums to swell, allowing more plaque to buildup, which can eventually lead to gum disease. At this point, our dentist may suggest scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning. During this procedure, we will remove the plaque from below the gumline and gently clean and smooth the roots of your teeth, allowing them to re-form healthy attachments to the jaw. This treatment can slow or even prevent periodontal disease.
