When one of your molars or premolars develops a large section of tooth decay, it is important to see Dr. Daniel Baird as soon as possible for restorative dentistry before your oral health is compromised. Tooth sensitivity and other signs of a cavity mean it’s time for a visit to the dentist.
Depending on the size and severity of the cavity, we may be able to repair the damage with a dental inlay or onlay for conservative treatment.
Typically, these types of dental fillings are made of a porcelain material that blends them in with the smile, and the type we recommend depends on tooth decay size and location. If the cavity is limited to the tooth’s biting surface, a dental inlay may be the optimal treatment. Dental onlays are typically ideal if there is a larger section of tooth decay that has reached the sides of the tooth beyond the biting surface.
However, if there is a significant amount of enamel that has been decayed or you had a large dental filling that was lost, the remaining tooth may not be enough for a filling and may require a dental crown instead. A crown is placed by removing the outer layer of the tooth so that it becomes an abutment, and the custom dental crown is provided by a dental lab.
